The Arabian Nights

December 1, 2008

Mary Zimmerman's take on this famous old story about a woman who manages to save her life by spinning tales at Berkeley Rep is as visually lustrous as it is verbally ribald. Through January 4.

  • I loved this show SO MUCH! I haven't had as wonderful of an experience in (or should I say "with") an audience in such a long time. I felt involved. I felt unified. I felt engaged. It was truly an "experience" in the way theatre rarely makes me feel. It harkened back to the shaman telling "our people's" stories in hopes of teaching us about ourselves (the shaman being one of our conduits to personal transformation and change...kinda like theatre!)

    And!
To my mind it "had something for everybody" while still being smart theatre.

    And!
It was smart theatre without being "smarty pants" theatre or "aren't we so smart for getting 'it' theatre".

If I had the money I would have gone more times and taken new friends each time!!!

I wish the show had a home here for the next few years. I'm sorry to see it leave.
